Solidarity with the Family of the Deceased Naïm Briki
The undersigned organizations and associations are following with outrage the case of the death of the young man Naïm Briki, which occurred following a violent assault by police officers, according to information provided by his family to the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights.
According to the same statement, his death was caused by severe injuries to his head, ears, and eyes following a brutal assault on the night of Friday, November 22, 2025. He was pursued by police officers for failing to obey a stop sign while riding a motorcycle. He died after approximately two weeks of suffering at the Ibn Al-Jazzar University Hospital in Kairouan as a result of his critical injuries.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Kairouan Court of First Instance announced the opening of an investigation into the incident. However, the announcement of his death triggered a wave of popular protests in the Ali Bey neighborhood of Al-Mansoura, which spread to neighboring areas and led to the arbitrary arrest of a number of young people.
The death of Naïm Briki highlights the recurring tragedies linked to systematic police violence and epitomizes, once again, the policy of impunity.
The undersigned organizations and associations:
- Extend their sincere condolences and sympathy to the family of the deceased Naïm Briki and express their absolute solidarity with them in this painful ordeal.
- Strongly condemn all forms of police violence and excessive use of force, and demand that full responsibility be assigned to anyone proven to have been involved in this crime.
- Call for a serious and transparent judicial investigation that guarantees the full truth will be revealed and that those responsible will be held accountable without discrimination or institutional protection.
- Urge that protests be met not with repression and legal prosecution, but with the revelation of the truth and the prosecution of those responsible.
- Demand an end to impunity in cases of torture and police violence, and call for guarantees that such crimes will not be repeated.
- Reiterate their call for genuine and radical reform of security institutions, based on respect for human rights and the principles of accountability.
