Hidden death on Tunisian coasts
Since Sunday, June 8, the beaches of Sfax and Mahdia governorates have yielded dozens of bodies possibly belonging to irregular migrants. In a context in which information is withheld from the national public, official authorities rarely publish any detailed data about the drownings along Tunisia’s coasts since June 2024.
These tragedies are repeated in a context in which the state has chosen to expel migrants from the places where they have been relocated since the end of 2023 without providing alternatives to shelter, especially for the most vulnerable groups. Expulsions to the border also continue for those intercepted at sea after confiscating any means of communication with the outside world.
The scenes of death on the coasts, expulsion to the border, the burning and destruction of camps, and the testimonies of people on the move and refugees contradict the official narrative of humanitarian lessons in dealing with migrants.
However, the transformation of Tunisia’s coasts into a maritime graveyard is not only due to migrant smuggling networks and the practices of the Tunisian authorities, but is the product of engaging in the policies of exporting European borders, securitizing migration, accepting and justifying the role of a buffer wall for the European citadel in official discourse.
The Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights:
Expresses its condolences to the families of the victims and wishes for the safety of the missing, and expresses its solidarity with all the families in this human tragedy.
Expresses its solidarity with all people deprived of movement, food and medicine, displaced in olive groves, deserts and borders, and calls for an end to these inhumane practices.
Calls for an effective and practical commitment to save the lives of migrants in Tunisian territorial waters.
Demands more transparency in the migration file and to inform the national public opinion of all data on preventing sea border crossings, drowning incidents, forced deportations and details of cooperation with the European Union.

الموت المخفي على السواحل التونسية
لفظت شواطئ ولاية صفاقس وولاية المهدية منذ يوم الاحد 8 جوان عشرات الجثث من المحتمل انها تعود لمهاجرين غير نظاميين. في سياق يتم بحجب المعلومات عن الرأي العام الوطني لا تنشر السلطات الرسمية اية معطيات تفصيلية الا نادرا حول حوادث الغرق على طول السواحل التونسية منذ جوان 2024.
تتكرر هذه المآسي في سياق اختارت فيه الدولة طرد المهاجرين من الأماكن التي نقلتهم اليها منذ نهاية 2023 دون تقديم بدائل للإيواء خاصة للفئات الأكثر هشاشة. كما تتواصل عمليات الطرد الى الحدود لمن يتم اعتراضهم في البحر بعد مصادرة اية وسيلة اتصال مع العالم الخارجي.
ان مشاهد الموت على السواحل والطرد الى الحدود وحرق وتدمير المخيمات وشهادات الأشخاص المتنقلين واللاجئين تناقض السردية الرسمية حول الدروس الإنسانية في التعامل مع المهاجرين.
ومع ذلك، فإن تحويل السواحل التونسية إلى مقبرة بحرية لا يرجع فقط إلى شبكات تهريب المهاجرين وممارسات السلطات التونسية بل هي نتاج انخراط في سياسات تصدير الحدود الأوروبية وأمننة الهجرة والقبول بدور حائط صدّ للقلعة الأوروبية والتبرير لذلك في الخطاب الرسمي.
ان المنتدى التونسي للحقوق الاقتصادية والاجتماعية:
- يترحم على ارواح الضحايا ويتقدم بتعازيه الحارة لعائلاتهم ويتمنى السلامة للمفقودين.ات ويعبّر عن تضامنه مع كل العائلات في هذا المأساة الإنسانية.
- يعبر عن تضامنه مع كل الأشخاص المحرومين من التنقل والغذاء والدواء المشردين في غابات الزيتون وفي الصحاري وعلى الحدود ويدعو للقطع مع هذه الممارسات غير الإنسانية.
- يدعو للالتزام الفعلي والعملي بإنقاذ أرواح المهاجرين في المياه الإقليمية التونسية.
- يطالب بمزيد الشفافية في ملف الهجرة واعلام الرأي العام الوطني بكل المعطيات حول عمليات منع اجتياز الحدود البحرية وحوادث الغرق وعمليات الترحيل القسري وتفاصيل التعاون مع الطرف الأوروبي.
